The Wakefield Foundation, Inc.

The Wakefield Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation organized to preserve and restore the former Wakefield High School Building. We are also deeply committed to preserving local history, providing educational opportunities, and offering programs and activities for the well-being of the Wakefield community and surrounding areas.

The Foundation was selected as a Lowe's Hometowns Signature Project

We're thrilled to share that the Wakefield Foundation has been selected as a Lowe's Hometowns Signature Project for 2022. We are one of only 100 projects selected, and the only one in Virginia. This project means so much to us and we will be installing a Handicap Restroom on our 2nd level, next to the Auditorium. It is a dream come true, as we have been wanted this for a long time. The Wakefield Foundation offers the community many activities and services including:

The Marion Lillian Pittman Troxler Memorial Library

The Troxler Memorial Library, named for a local resident, is hosted by the Foundation. A branch of the Blackwater Regional Library, it offers a wide range of services to its patrons, including the latest best-sellers, a Children's Library, newspapers, music and videos.

Room Rentals

Several of the building's rooms are available for rent. Rental fees are: $450 for the auditorium, $200 for the gallery and $100 for the conference room. Please call to reserve the space for your meeting, wedding reception or fund-raising event for your club or church. For more information call (757) 899-6005.

Upcoming Events

Market Days will be held at the Foundation on the first Saturday of each month (second Saturday in September), starting April 2nd, from 8:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. Join us for Fresh Produce, a Flea Market, Crafters, Bakers, Food Vendors and more.

The Foundation will be taking part in the Route 460 Fall Festival on Saturday, October 1.

Community Day will return to the Foundation on Saturday, October 8.

Piano Lessons

We are hoping to find a new instructor for piano and voice lessons.

Dance Classes

Dance classes are returning to the Foundation. Studio 37 of Windsor will soon be hosting a variety of dance classes. More details are available on the Upcoming Events page. Interest Form


Percy Wyatt teachs Kung Fu in his studio in the Foundation. Classes are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30.p.m. For more information, call Percy at (757) 556-1016.

Line Dancing Classes

Jackie Lincoln, dance instructor will be teaching beginner/improver line dancing to a variety of music and dance rhythms at the Foundation on the second floor in the auditorium. Classes are Wednesdays- Beginner & Improver: 5:45 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Easy Intermediate: 7:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. For more information, call Jackie at (757) 469-5367.

Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting

Sussex-Surry New Hope meets at the Foundation on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. These open meetings are available to anyone interested in Alcoholics Anonymous' program of recovery from alcoholism.

Sussex County Seniors

The Senior Citizens of Sussex County meet at the Foundation on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. The meeting provide crafts and other activities, exercise, trips and a meal is served. Any Sussex County Senior is welcome to attend.

Wakefield Historical Association

The Wakefield Historical Association is dedidicated to preserving and sharing the history of Wakefield. Founded in 2017, the Association has its office and archive in the Building.
